WhiteMountainRoadTouted by some as Arizona's "best kept secret," the scenic White Mountains are a popular getaway for people in Phoenix and Tucson. With each passing year, more folks have decided to move to the Mountain permanently to enjoy the mild climate, streams, forests, and scenery. The region boasts the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in the world. Elk, a variety of birds, rabbit, deer, fox and other forms of wildlife are seen regularly in this area of northeastern Arizona.

Altitudes range from about 5000 feet to over 8000 feet. The White Mountains are considered the second highest region in Arizona. The altitude creates a distinct -- Raven Site Ruinsbut relatively gentle -- four season climate, with sun, snow and rain.

Recreational activities include winter sports like skiing at the Sunrise Resort, hunting and fishing, camping, archaeology, and fellowship.

John Wayne Actor John Wayne owned a working cattle ranch in the White Mountains.
Zane Grey Writer Zane Grey (in image) penned dozens of western stories from his cabin in the Mogollon Rim. The White Mountains are featured in other famous westerns such as The Haunted Mesa by Louis L'Amour (not pictured), an unusual western about the discovery of a portal through time.
